State Attorney Generals
State attorney general's offices will sometimes pursue debt collectors and other organizations involved in abusing or defrauding consumers. If you feel that a debt collector, individual, or other organization is involved in abusive or fraudulent practices, we encourage you to report this to your state attorney general's office. However, these offices are often overwhelmed by complaints. Because of that, it is imperative that you, as an individual, take action against these organizations. Keep in mind that it is very possible that if someone in the past had taken appropriate action before you were abused or defrauded, what happened to you may not have happened at all. Consequently, by taking individual action now against abusive debt collectors and other persons engaging in fraudulent activities you are doing more than vindicating your rights, you are protecting future consumers.
